Facing History and Ourselves Cleveland

The Teaching Cleveland team maintains a special relationship with the Cleveland staff of Facing History and Ourselves (FHAO), an international organization dedicated to improving teacher pedagogy focused on students’ individual choices. The Teaching Cleveland team has attended numerous professional development workshops with FHAO – and many Teaching Cleveland educators have said that those were the best professional development experiences they have ever had. We encourage you to learn more!

What is the organization focused on and why is it important for our community?
Facing History’s mission is to use lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate. Our approach is rooted in civics, equity, social-emotional learning, and instruction. It is important to the community because schools in the region benefit from our student-centered support which builds students’ voice and agency.

What resources or programs do you have to connect educators and/or students with your work?
Facing History offers many resources and programs. Educators have access to curriculum, units, and teaching strategies related to various topics or events past and current. We also offer professional development and learning experiences that support teachers and student needs. Students often connect with our resources and programs through teachers at their schools and student leadership opportunities.

How can someone learn more or get more involved in FHAO?
By visiting  our website, one will see many resources. Go to “How it Works,” and “Get Involved.” You can also stay connected by subscribing and signing up for email updates at the bottom of our website.  There are also opportunities to connect locally with us at our regional office located at 2050 West 47th Street in Cleveland.
