The James A. Garfield Alliance, in partnership with Teaching Cleveland, is proud to host an educational conversation with area teachers focused on James A. Garfield and his efforts to promote civil rights during Reconstruction. However, the work of Garfield, who was deeply committed to advancing civil rights well beyond the Emancipation Proclamation, was cut short six months into his presidency following his assassination.

The story of President Garfield and the mood of northeast Ohio in the 1880s speaks clearly to the racial challenges we face today. The James A. Garfield Alliance and Teaching Cleveland are in the process of creating a curriculum to help tell the story of civil rights and Reconstruction in a way that connects to our current issues.
