Student Spotlight: Reflections from our summer intern

From watching them in action to supporting the mission.

My name is Marcella Moore. I graduated from Tri-C through the Mandel Honors Program and have transferred to Cleveland State University’s Mandel-Honors College to finish my Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy Management and Educational Studies.

I encountered Teaching Cleveland through Tri-C’s Mandel program. Teaching Cleveland took us through a walking tour and single handedly taught me more about Cleveland than I ever knew from my 25 years of living there. Moved by their mission to spread place-based education and build a sense of connection between residents and their home, I had no idea I would be given the opportunity to intern with them in the near future.

Teaching Cleveland provides services from professional development for teachers and other professionals, Cleveland tours, classes for high schoolers, and even partners with SYATT to host the FreshWater Institute. Their services are engaging, empowering, and deeply reflective. They enhance one’s understanding of the history of Cleveland and through that, enhances their compassion and understanding of the current condition of Cleveland. In just one month, I was able to experience a little of everything Teaching Cleveland offers. I’ve embraced my crucial role of capturing content from events, facilitating activities and tours, and learning alongside my supervisors. I look forward to continuing to spread the mission of Teaching Cleveland through marketing and social media efforts.
